The Symbolism and Meaning of Diamonds
Diamonds have always carried a special sort of symbolism throughout history. Today, it can be mostly known for its significance in romance - which has a diamond ring being the most important ring a male ever buys, and offers to the woman that they loves.
But some time before that, diamonds were built with a very different sort of symbolism and meaning. For millennia, the traits of diamonds that have made them so valuable and so treasured have been interpreted by different cultures in another way, and their strength, hardness, brilliance and wonder have signified various meanings.
In the past, the Greeks held the point that diamonds were the tears with the gods because of its physical properties that was out of this world. The Romans believed roughly the identical, only as an alternative to being the tears in the gods they believed that diamonds were fragments of fallen stars.
Halfway worldwide from there, in ancient India diamonds were thought to have magical properties and were of particular religious and mythological significance. Diamonds in India were never cut, as it was said that if they were their powers would dissipate.
In Tibetan Buddhism, diamonds also play an important role and in fact Tibetan Buddhism is actually called Vajrayana which loosely means the Diamond Vehicle, and something of their most crucial texts is termed the Diamond Sutra.
Since those ancient times, several other myths and legends have sprung forth around diamonds too. In the Middle Ages, it absolutely was thought that diamonds could tell whether a person was innocent or guilty, understanding that a diamond would darken inside presence of guilt, and shine bright inside presence of innocence.
This remarkable stone has always been said to bring luck and fortune to anyone who wears it, and in many cases warriors and Kings would wear it into battle, believing it would bring them victory over their enemies.
As we discussed, the symbolism and meaning behind diamonds has varied throughout history.
Its fashionable meaning of romance and marriage only began in 1477 if the Archduke Maximilian of Austria gave a hoop to Mary of Burgundy for engagement. Although before that there are actually cases of betrothal gifts which involve diamond jewelry for instance tiaras, brooches, and necklaces - that's the first case of a diamond ring being given upon an engagement.
Naturally - the remaining is history.
Today, the significance of loose diamonds in romance and engagement may be the predominant symbolism across the world. It has a special meaning, and it has potent emotional significance, but that doesn't mean that it could not one day symbolize something quite different again.
Who knows what are the future holds to the symbolism and concise explaination diamonds.
